During our exploration of Microsoft’s Kinect, we brainstormed about the possibilities of hand detection. Four Hand Origami is a tutorial for creating digital origami and explores how hand detection can be used in a platform for collaborative creation. Multiple designers work together to achieve what is normally crafted solo. The tutorial was created using Processing along with Microsoft’s Kinect to track each user’s hands. One user “holds” the paper in place by holding both hands up, next to each other. They are able to scale the paper by increasing/decreasing the distance in between their hands. The second user steps in to fold the paper by crossing their hands in between the first user’s hands. As they cross, the paper animates to make the image of the paper fold. Four Hand Origami is a playful way for users to generate creations together, and explores how tutorials can become a “performance.”
